GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. GENERAL
The GPS is a satellite-based radionavigation system which enables an aircraft to be located anywhere (tridimensional positioning : latitude, longitude and altitude).
The system consists of :
- the A78 GPS receiver,
- the E48 GPS antenna,
- the configuration module (if installed),
Interfaced-with-HSI version
- the A92 relay box,
- the A93 relay box. The system uses the horizontal situation indicator (HSI) of the heading reference system - refer to 34-21-00. All
The system also uses annunciators/switches or indicator lights of M6 advisory panel - refer to 31-50-00.
The GPS receiver receives information from the following equipment :
- the fuel flow system (option) - refer to 73-30-00,
- the encoding altimeter (option) - refer to 34-11-00.
The GPS sends information to the following equipment :
- the A50 audio control panel - refer to 23-11-00,
- the M63 multifunction display (option) - refer to 34-62-00,
- the VHF NAV/COMM. (KX 155A or KX 165A) transceiver of NAV1 installation or NAV2 installation (option) -refer to 34-51-00 or 34-52-00.
The system is electrically supplied by "BUS 3" bar.

3. DESCRIPTION
A. A78 GPS receiver (Figure 2)
The A78 GPS receiver can provide :
- permanent aircraft position-related information (longitude and latitude),
- guidance and navigation information display in relation to a flight plan defined by the pilot.
It also uses data stored in a database located in a data base card (1) inserted in the front panel of the equipment.
Mainly controlled by the two concentric knobs (7), the A78 GPS receiver can present a variety of information in a number of different page formats. One way to understand how the information are presented is to think of the receiver various display types as chapters in a book, with numbered pages each.
