4. OPERATION (Figure 2)
A56 transponder energization is obtained by means of "RADIO MASTER" switch.
When the pushbutton is set to "ON", the transponder is energized and replies to mode "A" identification interrogations. The identification code, entered into the transponder by means of the code selection pushbuttons (pushbuttons from "0" to "7"), is transmitted to the ground station.
When "VFR" pushbutton is pressed, the identification code shown on the central section of the display is replaced by the programmed VFR code.
When A56 transponder is operating in mode "C" ("ALT" pushbutton), the altitude data provided by M76 encoding altimeter are transmitted to the ground station. A56 transponder, with "FUNC" pushbutton used to select the display of flight level data, shows a flight level "FL" in hundreds of feet on the right section of its display. The displayed altitude is not the true altitude but the pressure altitude not corrected by the local pressure (reference pressure 29.92 in.Hg, that is 1013.25 hPa).
For example : if the display reads FL 075, the transmitted altitude is 7500 ft.
A56 transponder indicates the selected mode ("ALT", "ON" or "STBY") on the left section of its display.
