The system receives data from NAV 1 installation. It also sends data to NAV 1 installation - refer to 34-51-00.
If the DME interrogator is installed in conjunction with KNS 81 integrated navigation system, the system uses the DME warning indicator - refer to 34-51-00.
The system is electrically supplied by "BUS 2" bar.

3. DESCRIPTION A. A72 DME interrogator
A72 DME interrogator measures the slant range distance (line of sight) from the aircraft to a ground station and computes the groundspeed and the time-to-station. It displays distance, groundspeed and time-to-station. Its operating frequency range is 108.00 to 117.95 MHz over 200 channels.
On its front panel, the interrogator features :
- an "OFF" switch for energization,
- a mode "RMT - FREQ - GS/T" selector,
- two concentric knobs to select the displayed frequency in "FREQ" mode :
? the outer knob increases or decreases the frequency in increments of 1 MHz,
? the inner knob, when pushed in, increases or decreases the frequency in increments of 0.1 MHz,
. the inner knob, when pulled out, adds 0.05 MHz to the displayed frequency and increases or decreases the frequency in increments of 0.1 MHz.

- a display to indicate, in RMT and GS/T modes, distance, speed and time data, and, in FREQ mode, distance and frequency data.
The DME interrogator contains the circuits required to interrogate a DME ground station and to compute the slant range distance to the station.
The maximum range of A72 DME interrogator is 389 Nautical Miles but this depends on several factors, the most important being the altitude of the aircraft. The DME interrogator transmits coded interrogation signals (pulse pairs) to the ground station. The ground station receives the interrogation, delays (50 Rs) and returns a coded reply signal (pulse pairs) for each interrogation. The DME interrogator uses the time elapsed between the interrogation and the reply to compute the distance to the ground station.
A72 DME interrogator is electrically supplied by "BUS 2" bar via CB 89 "DME" circuit breaker. A72 DME interrogator is mounted in PL30 radio rack.
B. E37 DME antenna
DME antenna is a blade antenna which provides frequency coverage over 950 to 1260 MHz (L band). DME antenna is attached under the fuselage within the aircraft centerline between C4 and C5 frames. 4. OPERATION
RMT-FREQ-GS/T mode selector permits tuning A72 DME interrogator to NAV 1 system or to internal frequency. When the selector is set to "RMT", the frequency information from the NAV 1 system is applied to the DME interrogator. When the selector is set to "FREQ", DME interrogator is tuned to visualised frequency. DME interrogator sends a suppression pulse to the transponder during the transmission. The suppression pulse prevents system interference. A72 DME interrogator transmits a pulse coded interrogation signal that actuates a corresponding ground station reply. A72 DME interrogator computes distance, groundspeed and time-to-station.
