When the A72 DME interrogator is locked to the ground station, the reply signal is received and processed by the A72 DME interrogator. The identification signal is decoded in A72 DME interrogator and applied to A50 audio control panel.
A. DME interrogator in remote "RMT" mode
This mode permits DME interrogator operation tuned to NAV 1 system.
The distance, the groundspeed and the time-to-station are displayed on the DME interrogator.
B. DME interrogator in frequency "FREQ" mode
This mode permits the DME interrogator operation on an internal frequency selected via the concentric knobs of the DME interrogator.
The distance and the frequency are displayed on the DME interrogator.
C. DME interrogator in groundspeed/time-to-station "GS/T" mode
This mode permits locking the DME interrogator to the last frequency selected in "FREQ" mode. The distance, the groundspeed and the time-to-station are displayed on the DME interrogator.
To prevent the display of false information (when the DME interrogator is not locked to the ground station or during energization), the DME interrogator shows dashes, in this case, just reset the system by switching to "RMT" mode or to "FREQ" mode.

DME INSTALLATION
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. GENERAL (Figure 1)
The DME is a short- and middle-range radio-navigation aid. It determines the slant-range distance by measuring the time required for the signal to reach the ground transmitter and return back to the aircraft. It also provides the aircraft ground speed and the time-to-station.
The optional system consists of :
- the A72 DME interrogator,
- the E37 DME antenna,
- the S115 "DME" rotary switch on the left instrument panel,
- two relays, K105 - K106 on PL100 panel - refer to 34-28-00.
The DME system sends an audio signal to A50 audio control box - refer to 23-11-00.
The DME system receives data from :
- NAV 1 system - refer to 34-51-00,
- NAV 2 system - refer to 34-52-00.
The DME system sends data to :
- A104 symbol generator of the EFIS system - refer to 34-28-00.
