A56 transponder is electrically supplied by "BUS 1" and / or "BUS 2" bar(s) via master radio relay and protected by CB90 "XPDR" circuit breaker.
A56 transponder is mounted on the R.H. panel strip or in the radio rack (alternate location). B. E36 transponder antenna
E36 transponder antenna allows signal reception and transmission within the L band (Frequency within 950 and 1260 MHz).
E36 transponder antenna is mounted under the fuselage on inspection door 215.
4. OPERATION
NOTE : For equipment operation and maintenance, refer to the supplier's Maintenance Manual. A56 transponder energization is obtained by means of RADIO MASTER switch.
When the function selector knob is set to "ON", the transponder replies to identification interrogations in "A" mode.
When A56 transponder is operating in "C" mode (function selector knob set to "ALT"), the altitude data provided by encoding altimeter are transmitted to the ground station. A56 transponder displays, in the L.H. portion of its display window, a Flight Level "FL" in hundreds of feet. The displayed altitude is not the true altitude but the barometric altitude not corrected by the local pressure (reference pressure 29.92 inches of mercury that is 1013.25 hPa).
Example : If the display reads FL 075, the transmitted altitude is 7500 ft.

TRANSPONDER
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. GENERAL
The transponder is an integral part of the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS).
The transponder allows the operational air traffic service to identify the aircraft.
The system consists of :
- the A56 transponder,
- the E36 transponder antenna.
The transponder receives altitude information from the encoding altimeter (option) - refer to 34-11-00.
A desensitization line connects A56 transponder to the DME installation (option) - refer to 34-55-00.
The transponder is electrically supplied by "BUS 1" and/or "BUS 2" bars.
