during identification code selection to cancel the latest activation of one of the pushbuttons and return to the code that was valid before the pushbutton was activated.
- "8" and "9" pushbuttons are provided either to adjust the display contrast and brightness (configuration mode) or to enter 8 and 9 figures to select the starting time of time measure function in counting-down mode.
A56 transponder receives a coded interrogation transmitted by the air traffic control ground radar station on a 1030-MHz carrier. A56 transponder decodes and processes the interrogations and sends a coded response on a 1090-MHz carrier.
A56 transponder is electrically supplied by "BUS 1" and/or "BUS 2" bars via a diode and a fuse respectively. The transponder is protected by CB 90 "XPDR" circuit breaker.
A56 transponder is mounted on R.H. panel strip. B. E36 transponder antenna
The transponder antenna allows signal reception and transmission within the L band (frequency within 950 to 1260 MHz).
The transponder antenna is mounted under the fuselage on the cowling under hull.

4. OPERATION (Figure 2)
A56 transponder energization is obtained by means of "RADIO MASTER" switch.
Connecting the transponder to the global positioning system via an ARINC 429 link allows the aircraft to be detected on the ground.
During flight, A56 transponder receives interrogations from ground radar station or TCASs at 1030-Mhz frequency.
The transponder replies to mode "A" interrogations by transmitting to the ground station the identification code, entered into the transponder by means of the code selection pushbuttons (pushbuttons from "0" to "7").
When "VFR" pushbutton is pressed, the identification code shown on the central section of the display is replaced by the programmed VFR code.
The transponder replies to mode "C" interrogations by transmitting the identification code and altitude information.
When A56 transponder is operating in mode "C" ("ALT" pushbutton), the altitude data provided by M76 encoding altimeter are transmitted to the ground station. A56 transponder, with "FUNC" pushbutton used to select the display of flight level data, shows a flight level "FL" in hundreds of feet on the right section of its display. The displayed altitude is not the true altitude but the pressure altitude not corrected by the local pressure (reference pressure 29.92 in.Hg, that is 1013.25 hPa).
For example : if the display reads FL 075, the transmitted altitude is 7500 ft.
