The area navigation (RNAV) is a navigation method to fly from a point to another by following a selected course, but without having to fly towards another station. The selected course is defined by a waypoint. The waypoint is a predetermined geographic position located in a space covered by a VOR / DME station. The waypoint is defined by its radial and its distance at the VOR / DME station. The waypoint is often named phantom station, because it provides the same navigation information as a VOR / DME station, which would be located on the waypoint. The optional system consists of the following elements : - an integrated navigation system, - an optional VOR signal separator, - an optional GS signal separator, - a VOR / LOC antenna, - a GS antenna, - a DME antenna, - an optional course deviation indicator (CDI). Aircraft equipped with HSI option In this case, the CDI is not installed and the system uses the horizontal situation indicator of the heading reference system as indicator - refer to 34-21-00. All The system uses DME antenna. It also sends a suppression pulse to the transponder - refer to 34-53-00. The system sends audio signals to audio control box - refer to 23-11-00. The system sends data to : - the optional radio magnetic indication system - refer to 34-25-00, - the optional autopilot system - refer to 22-10-00. The integrated navigation system combines in a single unit a VOR / LOC receiver, a DME interrogator, an RNAV computer and a glideslope receiver. The signal separator (option) permits operation of two receivers from one antenna. The system is electrically supplied by "BUS 1" bar and protected by "NAV 1" circuit breaker.
