3) All equipment normally carried in the aircraft shall be stored in its usual position.
4) The flight controls shall be in their normal position for straight and level flight.
NOTE : Direct reading compasses shall be checked prior to installation to ensure that the compass element is balanced correctly.
5. COMPASS COMPENSATION PROCEDURE
The aircraft shall be turned at a magnetic heading within 5 degrees of that required at all check points.
The aircraft magnetic heading shall be determined by any logical means, such as bearing compasses, alignments, marks on ground.
NOTE : Appropriate procedures for compass calibration are described in Paragraphs 7 and 8.
6. RECORDING
The results of each compass calibration shall be entered in the Aircraft Log Book or a maintenance record.
A compass correction card - see Figure 201, shall be compiled for primary and standby compasses in legible form showing :
1) The magnetic heading and compass reading necessary to obtain the magnetic heading at the cardinal and intermediate 30 degree headings, unless the deviation in all cases is less than one degree, in which case the card may be endorsed "ERRORS LESS THAN 1°" instead of the corrected headings.
2) The corrections to be applied when there is a change in compass deviation, within the limits permitted in Paragraph B4 revealed during compass calibration due to a radio or any electrical device being turned on.
3) The date of the compass calibration.
4) The identification of the aircraft.
5) The type and serial number of the compass.
6) The signature of the person authorized to certify completion of the compass calibration. NOTE : An additional card may be used if necessary to comply with the former paragraphs.
The compass correction card shall be protected against water or other damage and shall be installed near the compass, in easy view of the flight crew.
7. CALIBRATION PROCEDURE OF COMPASSES
CAUTION : COMPASS CALIBRATION SHALL BE PERFORMED AND CHECKED WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING (2000 RPM) AND INSTRUMENTS ARE SET TO "ON" : RADIONAVIGATION, ELECTRICAL SLIP INDICATOR, NAVIGATION LIGHTS, FLASHING LIGHTS AND / OR ANTICOLLISION LIGHTS
1) Head the aircraft within 5 degrees of each cardinal and 30 degree magnetic heading.
2) Determine the deviation at each heading. At each magnetic cardinal heading, check whether a change in deviation occurs when engine(s) electrical or radio equipment is operated.
3) Repeat these checks at each 30 degrees if a change in deviation does occur.
4) Compare these results with the previous calibrations using Paragraphs 1, 2 and 6 as a guide.

8. COMPENSATION PROCEDURE OF COMPASSES
NOTE : Compensation may be performed by either the correction of coefficients "Y" and "Z" or by halving the deviations of complementary cardinal headings. Normally, the latter method is only used for direct reading compasses in aircraft always operated in VFR conditions for standby compasses.
