d) 8 degrees for a standby compass. Superior clearances may however be acceptable provided that a compensation plate is added to the standby compass.
5) These limitations do not apply to magnetic interference that occurs occasionally and for short periods.
2. COMPENSATION OF COMPASSES
CAUTION : COMPASS COMPENSATION SHALL BE PERFORMED AND CHECKED WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING (2000 RPM) AND INSTRUMENTS ARE SET TO "ON" : RADIONAVIGATION, ELECTRICAL SLIP INDICATOR, NAVIGATION LIGHTS, FLASHING LIGHTS AND / OR ANTICOLLISION LIGHTS
NOTE : Engine rating of 2000 RPM has been chosen as the alternator full capacity is obtained from this rating on.
1) Compasses shall be compensated when the result of the compass calibration discloses :
a) a deviation which differs by 3 degrees or more from that anticipated from the previous calibration or
b) a deviation in excess of the limits specified in Paragraph B1 at any heading.
2) Compass compensation shall be performed by aligning the axis of the aircraft with each of the cardinal and 30 degree magnetic headings and :
a) determining the compass deviations.
b) compensating the compass for coefficients "X", "Y" and "Z" if they exceed 2 degrees. NOTE : Paragraphs 7 and 8 give appropriate procedures for compass compensation.
3. COMPASS COMPENSATING AREA (Figure 201)
For convenience, a compass compensating area shall be suitable to maneuver the aircraft and shall be free from characteristics which would significantly affect the accuracy of compass calibrations or compensations. A site having a small number of low intensity stable magnetic anomalies is acceptable provided that surveyed corrections are used.
NOTE : Underground steel tanks, cables, reinforcement plates, steel hangars, and reinforced concrete runways are likely to cause magnetic anomalies.
4. PREPARATION FOR COMPASS COMPENSATION
Prior to any compass compensation the preparations outlined in this paragraph shall be completed.
1) The proper functioning of the compass must be checked and found to be in accordance with the compass manufacturer's specifications. Instead of the manufacturer's specifications, a direct reading compass may be substituted if :
a) there are no signs of leakage.
b) bubbles, excessive sediment and discolouration are not present in the liquid.
c) the pivot friction shall not exceed the compass manufacturer's tolerances except in cases where these tolerances are not known. The pivot friction shall be determined by deflecting (magnet) the compass past 10 degrees then removing the deflecting force after which the compass will return to ± 2 degrees of its original indication.
d) the compass mounting shall be sound and in good condition.
2) All equipment normally not carried in the aircraft shall be removed.
