A. Coefficient method
1) Set compensator magnets to neutral (if applicable).
2) Head the aircraft axis within 5 degrees of each magnetic cardinal heading and determine the deviations. Calculate coefficients "X", "Y" and "Z" by the formula :
Coefficient "X" : North Dev. + East Dev. + South Dev. + West Dev.
4
Coefficient "Y" : East Dev. - West Dev.
2
Coefficient "Z" : North Dev. - South Dev.

3) With the aircraft on any magnetic cardinal heading add coefficient "X" algebraically to the compass reading to get the corrected magnetic heading.
Loosen attachments and rotate the compass (or the flux valve) until the compass reads the corrected heading. Normally, this adjustment is not applicable for panel mounted compasses.
4) Head the aircraft on magnetic North within 5 degrees. Add coefficient "Z" algebraically to the compass reading to determine the corrected magnetic heading. Adjust the North-South compensator to make the compass read the corrected reading.
5) Head the aircraft on magnetic East within 5 degrees. Add coefficent "Y" algebraically to the compass reading to determine the corrected magnetic heading. Adjust the East-West compensator to make the compass read the corrected reading.
6) Conduct the compass calibration specified in Paragraph 7.
B. Simplified method
1) Set the compensator magnets to neutral.
2) Determine and remove if applicable any coefficient "X" as specified in Paragraphs 2 and 3.
3) Head the aircraft on magnetic North within 5 degrees. Determine the aircraft magnetic heading and adjust the North-South compensator to make the compass read the aircraft magnetic heading.
4) Head the aircraft on magnetic East within 5 degrees. Determine the aircraft magnetic heading and adjust the East-West compensator to make the compass read the aircraft magnetic heading.
5) Head the aircraft on magnetic South within 5 degrees. Determine the aircraft magnetic heading. Adjust the North-South compensator to make the compass read half the difference between the aircraft magnetic heading and the compass reading.
6) Head the aircraft on magnetic West within 5 degrees. Determine the aircraft magnetic heading. Adjust the East-West compensator to make the compass read half the difference between the aircraft magnetic heading and the compass reading.
7) Conduct the compass calibration specified in Paragraph 7.
