- a heading reference point,
- an indication concerning the lateral deviation of the aircraft in relation to a VOR radial, a desired course (NAV or GPS) or the axis of a LOCALIZER,
- an indication concerning the vertical deviation of the aircraft in relation to a glide slope (GLIDE). The front face of the indicator includes :
- a lubber line that indicates the aircraft magnetic heading on the compass card,
- a course pointer that indicates, as the case may be, the VOR radial, the desired course (NAV or GPS) or the runway alignment axis selected on the compass card,
- a deviation bar that indicates the deviations with respect to the VOR radial, the desired course (NAV or GPS) or to the runway alignment axis,
- the glide slope pointers that indicate the vertical deviation with respect to the glide slope. The pointers are visible only when the glide slope signal is valid,
- a NAV warning flag which drops into view following the loss of a signal or the failure of the VOR or GPS receiver,
- an HDG warning flag which becomes visible if the system fails,
- a course select knob which allows rotating the course pointer on the compass card,
- a heading select knob which allows positioning the heading marker on the compass card.
The horizontal situation indicator transmits the heading signal to the optional RMI and the optional stormscope via a synchro-transmitter.
The horizontal situation indicator also provides the optional autopilot with the course and heading signals (DC voltages) determined by the respective position on the compass card of the course pointer and the heading marker.
The horizontal situation indicator receives several electrical supplies from the slaved directional gyro. Only
the NAV warning flag processing circuitry is supplied via the circuit breaker of the NAV 1 system. The horizontal situation indicator is installed on the L.H. instrument panel.
4. OPERATION
NOTE : For equipment operation and maintenance, refer to the supplier's Maintenance Manual. The heading reference system being in the slaved gyro mode "SLAVE", when energized, the HSI compass card will automatically fast slave at the rate of 180° per minute to align with the magnetic heading detected by
the flux valve. When the deviation between the heading of the directional gyro and the magnetic heading is cancelled, the slow (3° per minute) slaving function is initiated to keep both headings aligned.
The deviation pointer (if provided) of the slaving accessory indicates the deviation between the heading of the directional gyro and the magnetic heading (deflection of the pointer with respect to the fixed marker).

The "HDG" warning flag comes into view when :
- the rotation speed of the directional gyro is incorrect,
- the electrical power applied to the system is insufficient.
