CAUTION : GYROSCOPES ARE FRAGILE INSTRUMENTS AND MUST BE HANDLED WITH THE GREATEST CARE. AVOID CARELESS HANDLING OF SENSITIVE INSTRUMENTS. CAUTION : IN CASE OF SHIPMENT BACK TO THE MANUFACTURER, THE GYROSCOPE MUST BE IMPERATIVELY SHIPPED IN A SPECIFIC PADDED PACKING SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL ONE. DURING SHIPMENT, A POORLY PACKED INSTRUMENT MAY EXPERIENCE MORE SEVERE MALFUNCTIONS THAN THOSE AT THE ORIGIN OF ITS RETURN. 1. SERVICING Refer to 34-23-00. 2. REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - GYROSCOPIC INSTRUMENTS A. Tools and consumable materials - Wire brush - Teflon tape (TB 09-901) - Cleaning agent (TB 11-003) - Blanking caps and plugs - Clean lint-free cloths B. Removal of a horizon or a air-driven directional gyro 1) Make sure that the main switch-breaker is open. 2) Tilt the instrument panel on which the gyroscopic instrument is secured - refer to 31-10-01. 3) Remove the screws, the washers and the upper cover of the instrument panel. 4) Mark and disconnect the hoses and the electrical connections. 5) Remove the front cover (if installed) of the instrument panel and remove the gyroscopic instrument. 6) Blank off the instrument fittings and the hoses. 7) If the gyroscopic instrument is to be replaced, retain the fittings, the attachment hardware and the lighting kit (if installed). Blank off the outlets of the instrument. NOTE : Mark fitting direction on the instrument, then remove fittings. C. Installation of a horizon or a air-driven directional gyro 1) If necessary, install the fittings on the gyroscopic instrument : a) Clean the threads of the fittings. b) Wind one and a half to two turns of teflon tape (TB 09-901) around the threads of each fitting in the direction of the threads while sufficiently tensioning the tape during its installation. c) Install the fittings on the instrument, comply with the positions marked during removal.
