C. Transponder - refer to 34-53-00
The transponder allows the identification of the aircraft by a ground-based air traffic control station.
D. Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) - refer to 34-54-00
The ADF system for radioelectric emission location allows elaborating transmission-related information of the ground-based transmitter (radiocompass).
E. DME installation - refer to 34-55-00
The DME installation allows measuring the slant range distance between a ground-based station and the aircraft.
F. Global Positioning System (GPS) - refer to 34-57-00 The GPS installation allows defining the position of an aircraft using a network of satellites.

MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. SERVICING
None
2. REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - RADIONAVIGATION INSTRUMENTS (Figure 201)
I  NOTE : This procedure applies to most radionavigation instruments installed into the radio rack or
the R.H. panel strip.
A. Tools and consumable materials
- 3/32 in (2.38 mm) Allen wrench
B. Typical removal procedure of a radionavigation instrument
1) Make sure that the main switch-breaker is open.
2) Insert a 3/32 in (2.38 mm) Allen wrench into orifice (2) located on the front face of the radionavigation instrument.
NOTE : The location of orifice (2) on the front face varies according to the radionavigation instrument.
I 3) Fully unscrew the locking system. Do not force.
4) Extract the radionavigation instrument (1) by pulling it from the sides (Do not pull the instrument control
knobs).
C. Typical installation procedure of a radionavigation instrument
1) Make sure that the main switch-breaker is open.
2) Check the condition of the pins of the connector secured at the bottom of the rack.
3) Insert the radionavigation instrument (1) in its rack.
4) Apply a light axial pressure to engage the instrument connector into the rack connector.
5) Screw the locking system with a 3/32 in (2.38 mm) Allen wrench.
6) Make sure the radionavigation instrument is correctly secured in its rack (correct locking).
7) Make sure all the tools and materials are removed and the work area is clean and free from debris.
8) If the instrument is replaced, perform a configuration, if necessary - refer to the corresponding
Chapter/Section 34-5X-XX Page 500.
NOTE : For the first installation of some equipment, it is necessary to define parameters.
9) Perform an operational test of the system.
