B. Filter assy The filter is the element which purifies the air penetrating the air inlet of all impurities liable to be absorbed by the engine and affect its operation. It is composed of an aluminum box containing a foam air filter. It is placed behind a screen at the front of the air inlet. Pre-SB 10-118-71 An additional air filter can be installed in the filter assy, downstream from the first filter, to prevent ingestion of very fine particles. C. Alternate Air The Alternate Air is a mechanical shutter which admits air (at power plant ambient temperature) to the air box behind the filter, should the latter become blocked. Located on the air intake box, it is actuated either automatically by intake of air and a return spring or mechanically by the control (if installed) located under the L.H. instrument panel strip near the pedestal. REMOVAL OF AIR INTAKE BOX (Figure 401) A. Tools and consumable materials - Blanking caps B. Procedure WARNING : PRIOR TO ANY OPERATION, ENSURE THAT THE ENGINE, EXHAUST PIPE AND MANIFOLDS ARE COLD. IF NOT, TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID SEVERE BURNS. WARNING : PRIOR TO ANY OPERATION, ENSURE THAT THE KEY IS REMOVED FROM MAGNETO SELECTOR AND THAT "MAIN SWITCH" IS OFF. IF AIRCRAFT IS EQUIPPED WITH DISCONNECT PLUG ON FIREWALL, DISCONNECT "MAGNETO DISCONNECT" PLUG AND CONNECT IT TO "GROUND MAGNETO FOR SERVICING" PLUG. 1) Remove the engine cowlings - refer to 71-10-01. 2) Remove screws (18), washers (19), grid (17) and air filter (15). With additional air filter, Pre-SB 10-118-71 3) Remove and discard additional air filter (20). All 4) Remove and discard nuts (10). Remove washers (11) and (12), bolts (13) and filter assy (14). 5) Remove and discard nut (6). Remove washers (4) and (5) and bolt (3). With lockwired bolts (8) 6) Cut and discard the lockwire. All 7) Hold air intake box (9). Remove bolts (8), washers (7), air intake box (9) and gasket (1). Blank off. 2. INSTALLATION OF AIR INTAKE BOX (Figure 401) A. Tools and consumable materials - Lubricant (TB 06-903) - Stainless steel lockwire, dia. 0.024 in (0.6 mm) - Grease (TB 04-004A) B. Procedure 1) Check air intake box (9) and filter assy (14) for shock marks, cracks and corrosion. 2) Operate the shutter and check for correct operation.
